SUMMER 2011 HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES

The Summer Session at Carroll Academy concluded on July 29. Students, staff, family and friends gathered at 10:30 in the cafeteria to recognize students who graduated the program and those who received high school diplomas. The Academy completed another successful year due to the efforts of our dedicated staff and students willing to challenge themselves to make positive choices. Congratulations to each student who worked so hard to achieve program and high school graduation. The High School Graduates include: Bernice Petty and Daniel Guy.

BARDWELL MAKES ALL-DISTRICT

Marcus Bardwell was named to the District 13-A All District Team. Mr. Bardwell led his teammates in a successful 2010-2011 season. His leadership and impressive play spurred the Jaguars to very competitive play throughout each game. The most notable games include two district wins over Gleason and Huntingdon. He averaged 16.1 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists per game. His season free throw percentage was 65% and field goal percentage was 52%. Congratulations Marcus.

CARROLL ACADEMY GRADUATION 2011

May 20, 2011: Carroll Academy completed another successful year. The Spring Semester concluded with our Graduation Exercises. Five students were awarded High School Diplomas as each successfully fulfilled the requirements for high school graduation. Those Graduating are: Brittian Thompson, Jarodd Cherry, Melanie Murphy, Marcus Bardwell and Adam Johnson. Congratulations on a job well done. The Academy offers you best wishes in your future and post graduation education and plans.

Winter Santiago selected Region 7A MVP

Winter Santiago has been selected as the Region 7A Volleyball Most Valuable Player for the 2010 season. Her exceptional performances have also earned her the Charter Communications Player of the week. Winter has proven to be a very talented athelete and the top performer in Region 7A. State Representative Visits the Academy

Representative Curtis Halford vistited the Academy on February 18 and delivered approximately 20 Tennessee Blue Books for student use. Students lined the hallway to express their gratitude to Mr. Halford for his donation and hard work on supporting the Academy. Mr. Hatch recognize Mr. Halford as an official Jaguar and presented him Carroll Academy apparel. Thank you Rep. Halford for all of your hard work and support of the Academy.

CARROLL ACADEMY LADY JAGS VOLLEYBALL TEAM – Team members are: Chelsea Whittemore, Kattie Simon, Heather Todd, Augusta Darnell, and Stephanie Cox; Kiara Shivers, Kayla Kendall, Katie Kendall, Brianna Kintner, and Jonnie Yarbrough.

For the first time in Carroll Academy’s history, a sports team has earned state ranking, while breaking school records. The Carroll Academy Lady Jags volleyball team has won 10 matches and 37 games against opponents such as: Humboldt, Gibson County, South Gibson, Milan, Halls, Hardin County, Jackson Northside, TCA, and Scotts Hill.
They are ranked #7 in the Class A state volleyball poll. At one time during the season, they climbed to #5.
When they played Gibson County, Carroll Academy made 113 of 115 serves for a 98 percent accuracy rate. Their season average is 88 percent.
Two team members have been selected as Region 7A All- Region players. They are attacker/blocker Heather Todd, an 11th grade student with 236 kills, and outside hitter Augusta Darnell, a ninth grade student at the school.
Of the 13 girls enrolled at Carroll Academy, 10 play volleyball.
The Lady Jags will play in the region 7A semi-finals against Trenton on Tuesday, Oct. 20. The action will take place at Halls and will begin at 4 p.m. The winner of this meeting will advance to sub-state. The team is coached by Randy Hatch-head coach, and Patrick Steele-assistant coach.

CARROLL ACADEMY VOLLEYBALL

The Lady Jaguars of Carroll Academy have made an impressive start in the 2009 Volleyball Season. Coach Randy Hatch states our 2009 Lady Jags are mostly likely the most talented team in school history in any sport. Regardless of how the season ends, our Lady Jags will finish as the District 13-A Champions. Our current record is 4-6 with impressive wins over Gibson County and Humboldt. Today the Lady Jags are ranked number 7 in Division I-A play and has been as high as number 5 this season. The Lady Jaguars are led by the athleticism of junior team captain Heather Todd. Todd a two-year starter, states the success of the team has come from working together as a team, hard work during practice as well keeping a positive attitude and staying focused. Todd also believes that the team’s competitiveness will only improve as the season progresses. The staff and fellow students of the academy are very proud of the accomplishments of this team thus far and are expectant of continued success this season. Local Officials ask for funding assistance for Carroll Academy

Carroll County Mayor Kenny McBride, along with Carroll Academy principal Brent Bullock and Senior Administrator and Director of Juvenile Court Randy Hatch toured Carroll Academy on Feb. 23 with the field representatives of U.S. Congressman John Tanner, U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander and U. S. Senator Bob Corker.

Brad Thompson, field representative for Tanner; Matt Varina, field representative for Alexander; and Jane Jolley, field representative for Corker were invited to tour the facility to enlist their assistance in providing funds to keep Carroll Academy open.

Hatch explained that the school served approximately 250 students each year from the five counties of Carroll, Henry, Benton, Weakley and Henderson. He advised the visitors that students from the sixth through 12th grade attended the school, after being placed there by the juvenile court system. “I can’t imagine not having this school after 15 years of service to the children of this area,” said Hatch. “We’ve had a lot of success. We offer the same type of curriculum as regular schools, but also offer life skills courses for both students and their parents. Some of our graduates have gone on to have successful college careers.”

He said that there are currently 76 students in Carroll Academy. The number is down from the 140 students who attended last year before the budget cuts.

“We lost five full-time staff members because of the cuts,” said Hatch. “All five counties try to help with money, but they can’t just raise one million dollars.”

Hatch explained that the GED program at Carroll Academy has done a great deal of good. Last year, 26 out of 30 received their GED diplomas. This year 23 of 26 passed their GED test. He also told the field representatives that a number of the Carroll Academy students placed in the “Advanced” category of the Gateway tests.

Thompson asked why most of the students were at the school. Hatch told him that most were there for drug-related problems and truancy. He advised the visitors that none of the students in Carroll Academy were dangerous to the community.

“We’ve never had a fight in 15 years,” said Hatch. The visitors toured classrooms, the silkscreen shop and the gymnasium. “We asked them to come to see what happens here,” said McBride. “Carroll Academy is actually changing lives.”

Hatch and McBride asked for support from the field representatives. “Anything you can do to help would be greatly appreciated,” said McBride. “We need all the support we can get.” Hatch explained that it was public support that kept the school open this year.

“Public support turned the tide, or we wouldn’t be here,” said Hatch. “On June 30, I received a telephone call from a news reporter in Washington, D.C. That’s how we found out that we had gotten the funding to remain open this year.”

According to Hatch, the reporter had been following the fight to save Carroll Academy on the Internet, and couldn’t believe that Carroll Academy had a 96 percent attendance rate.

Hatch explained to the reporter that parents would go to jail for Contempt of Court if their son or daughter did not attend school. But, Hatch also said that 75 percent of the parents had come to the last parent-teacher conference at the school on their own, and for many, it was the first time that they had ever been to such a conference. Field Representative Jolley commended the Carroll Academy coaches for student and player behavior at sporting events.
